Get to learn and experience what it takes to make an animation, from conceptualization to render. Understand the general steps involved in the lifecycle of any animation and execute each step in the pipeline to create a 10 second animation of your own. This course is meant to open your eyes to the workings of various departments in animation and help you understand what truly sparks your interest.

  1. Conceptualization
    Learn what Story Telling is about, using tips and tricks to help ideate. Create a concept and understand Visual Metaphors. Learn to gather Reference Material and utilise Mood and Colour Boards to define your vision.

  2. Scripting
    Learn the basics of script writing and understand what information it provides for the animation process down the line. Create the Setting, Characters, Props, Action, Dialogue and more.

  3. Storyboard
    Building on the Script, the Storyboard process aims at translating the script into a visual format. This iterative process helps to inject emotion into the composition and provide a visual guideline for all to understand down the pipeline. Learn the basic industry standard rules and how to adapt past them.

  4. Animatic
    Learn to quickly add inbetween frames to help you time out your first pass of your entire animation. This process defines timings on a large scale and helps you understand what you are missing, or what you need to cut down on.

  5. Asset Design
    Use all of the pre-production steps above including your Mood, Colour and Reference Boards to help design Characters, Props and Backgrounds. Inculcate personality into your Asset Creation, no matter what artistic skill level you have. Practice building your Assets to work seamlessly with the following steps of Animation, such as Rigging and then Animation.

  6. Rigging
    Rigging is the technical Art of creating controllers for your Assets in order to Animate them in a easy methodical process, that saves time down the line and is far more forgiving then Traditional Animation drawings. You will learn how to build a skeleton into your assets and utilise the simple cut out points you already achieved in the building process of your Asset Creation.

  7. Animation
    Now is the time to bring all the prior steps you have taken and add life to it. Learn the basic principals of animation such as: Ease In, Ease Out, Anticipation, Follow Through, Squash, Stretch. Understand how this brings weight and mass to your Assets and in turn further bring out your story telling skills.

  8. Compositing
    Stitch the different parts of your animations into one cohesive piece. Use transitions and simple special effects to enhance your story and make it flow together. Learn how to get more out of your work by leveraging the power of your computer.

  9. Render
    Learn what different codecs are and how they are used in the industry. Set up your renders and allow the computer to merge every single frame into the masterpiece you have been working on all this while.
Create a short video with a single biped character made by you and animated according to your concept.
